How many countries make up South America?

There are 12 countries in South America. These are:1. Argentina2. Brazil3. Bolivia4. Chile5. Colombia6. Ecuador (plus The Galapagos islands)7. Guyana8. Paraguay9. Peru10. Suriname11. Uruguay12. Venezuela.

  1. French Guiana (note the spelling) is still a dependancy/colony of the French; they are not considered an independent country and is thus omitted as such. British Guiana changedthe spelling of its name when it gained independence in 1966 to Guiana and Dutch Guiana changed to Suriname.

  2. Hm, I wonder if geopolitically speaking, the French Guyana is part of South America or France. I e-mailed them and asked if that is why they did not add it as one of the countries.

    1. French Guiana was later claimed back by the British, but later became independent, but kept its former name. So, it is a free country.
